Current Research Work

  • Ship Hydrodynamics
    • With a small group of researchers at the UBC Mechanical Engineering naval architecture laboratory and in cooperation with BCRI towing tank, we are studying the safety of small craft and ferries. This is of some concern to us as BC Ferries play’s a vital role in connecting the Vancouver Island to the mainland. The numerical and experimental work is expected to give a better understanding of water accumulation on the large decks of RO/RO ferries and establish safe ferry design requirements.
  • Nonlinear Slender Body Code
    • In cooperation with a local naval architecture design office we are planning to apply the nonlinear slender body code to standard ships. We are also expanding the application of the nonlinear slender body with vortex generation to large motions. This procedure is numerically more efficient than the three dimensional codes for time domain calculations.
  • Ship Design
    • We are using Expert Systems and MATLAB for the preliminary design of small craft. The main objective is to include a crew or passenger safety mode in the design cycle of the preliminary design. This study includes possible use of multi hulls such as SWATH for fishing vessel design.
  • Experimental Studies
    • We developed a new procedure called panabolization of water lines to decrease ship resistance while increasing the displacement.
    • We are developing an optical system to measure the six degrees of motion of a self propelled ship model in a towing tank. This work is intended to simplify the model preparation for large motion studies including ship capsizing. A closed loop control procedure is then expected to control the speed and direction of the models for safe operation, permitting the evaluation of various strategies for safe operation at sea. In addition, a laser based wave surface measurement device for towing tanks is under development.
