Application Deadlines

Admission for September 2012 and January 2013 entry  – The online application is now closed.

All successful applicants are notified our offers as soon as offers were confirmed by the faculty. Otherwise, we will notify you of the outcome by the end of June for Sept applicants, and by the end of Aug for Jan applicants.

Admission for September 2013 entry  - The online application will open in November 2012. 

Deadlines:  early submissions of application packages are strongly encouraged.

February 1, 2013 for all international applicants; and domestic applicants who would like to be considered for 2013-2014 award competition
May 1, 2013 for domestic applicants

Admission for January 2014 entry – The online application will open in April 2013.

Deadlines:  early submissions of application packages are strongly encouraged.

May 1, 2013 for both domestic/international applicants

The above deadlines are for complete application packages (including all supporting documents), and apply to all graduate programs (PhD, MASc and MEng).

Admission decisions are made on an ongoing basis, and the process of making a decision on a file takes approximately 3-4 months after the deadline. The department normally contacts each successful applicant as soon as a decision was finalized.

Notes:

NEW!  Biomedical Engineering Program (MASc/PhD) applicants now directly apply to the BMEG office. However, all the paper documents should be submitted to the Mechanical Engineering Department.

January has a very limited intake only.

All admission inquires from applicants should be addressed to mech-admission@apsc.ubc.ca. Any admission inquires sent to other accounts will not receive a response.

Due to a large number of enquiries we are unable to confirm whether we have received your documents. The online check list will not be updated. We will contact you only if further information is required. We apologize that we are also unable to respond to individual inquiries concerning application status.

Although you have a PR status or Canadian citizenship, you are considered as an international applicant if your credentials are from out side of North America. See more information.

Applicants are not expected to find a supervisor(s) prior to the application submission. However, you are encouraged to indicate any preferred supervisor or research group you are interested in working with on the online application.

Step 1 – Ensure that you meet the Minimum Academic Requirements

The minimum GPA requirement

GPA = sum of credits multiplied by grades, divided by sum of credits. Minimum Academic Requirements

Please note that satisfying minimum GPA doesn’t guarantee for the grad program entry.

English Language Proficiency: the official score report should be submitted directly from the ETS

TOEFL
Overall score of 93 (internet-based test), 237 (computer-based test) or 580 (paper-based test).
Please use correct code for an official score request; Institution Code: 0965/Dept Code: 68.

IELTS
Overall score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component in the Academic test (NOT General test).

Graduate Studies Online Application for PhD/MASc applicants

MEng Online Application for MEng applicants only

Academic History section: Please list all post-secondary institutions you’ve attended in the order the most recent school first.

Program-Specific Questions section:

Last degree refers to Masters; Second-to-Last degree to Bachelor’s for PhD applicants.

State your original grade scale (do NOT convert it into a different scale). If your institution uses the grading system 0-100, your maximum attainable GPA should be 100.

How to issue Self-reported GPA

a) For North American credentials

Bachelor degree:

Include all 300/400 level courses (no matter when they were taken) within the Engineering degree

Note: if no 4th year grades were issued by the time of admission, report GPA based on 3rd year grades only.

Master degree: Overall GPA (include all grades earned in the program).

b) For International credentials

Bachelor degree: Overall GPA

Master degree: Overall GPA

Step 3 – Prepare all supporting documents

After you have completed the application, you will be required to send in the following items in support of your application:

UBC Mechanical Engineering requires three categories of documents:

1) Electronic copies for review;

2) Paper official records;

3) References.

Category 1: Electronic copies for review – submit as soon as possible

These electronic copies are used for identifying the best applicants. Please send a single .PDF format file of no more than 1.5 MB to gradapps@mech.ubc.ca.

The file should be named LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_(8-digit-student-number).pdf – for example, LEE_PAT_12345678.pdf.

Your file should include only the following documents, in the order prescribed:

1. Copy of your submitted application;

2. Letter of Intent (maximum 1 page);

3. CV including list of publications (maximum 3 pages);

4. Transcripts from all past post-secondary study (unofficial are acceptable as they will be verified against the official copies).

Category 2: Official Paper Documents – must arrive AFTER your application was made, and no later than your deadline stated above; a received package matched with no application will be on hold; earlier submission is strongly encouraged (former/current UBC students can waive #3 & 4)

If you have graduated from institutions where the transcripts are issued in a language other than English, you must provide two sets of official academic records issued in the original language AND accompanying certified English literal translations. If the issuing institution does not provide English translations of academic documents, you must arrange for official English translations to be done by a certified translator. All English translations must also be submitted in sealed, endorsed envelopes from the translator. Notarized copies are NOT acceptable.

International Transcripts, Degree Certificates & Translations

4. 2 sets of official degree certificates from all past post-secondary study (if the official transcript does not indicate the degree name and the degree conferral date): All degree certificates must arrive at UBC in sealed and endorsed envelopes issued by the Registrar of your home institution to be considered official. If you have graduated from institutions where the degree certificates are issued in a language other than English, you must provide two sets of official academic records issued in the original language AND accompanying certified English literal translations. If the issuing institution does not provide English translations of academic documents, you must arrange for official English translations to be done by a certified translator. All English translations must also be submitted in sealed, endorsed envelopes from the translator. Notarized copies are NOT acceptable.

International Transcripts, Degree Certificates & Translations

5. Official TOEFL/IELTS score report if applicable. The test must have been taken within the 24 months prior to the submission of your application. The official score report should be submitted directly from the ETS. Photocopies of test scores are not acceptable.6. A copy of both the front and back of your Permanent Resident card (for PR holders only);

7. An Affidavit of Support (required only from international students who have financial support outside of the department).

Category 3: References

Three letters of reference are required from referees who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Your referees’ information should be submitted through the online application; instructions on the eReference (online submission system) will then be emailed to your references.

eReference are strongly encouraged so faculty members can easily review your letters.

Alternatively, MASc/PhD applicants may submit paper forms or free-format letters. They must be sealed in envelopes, with the referee’s signature across the seal, for them to be considered official. Similarly, MEng applicants may submit free-format letters (there is no specific reference form available for MEng applicants).

Notes:

The GRE is not required for admission to a graduate program, however, it is strongly recommended.

Do not submit academic records that are not in sealed and endorsed envelopes direct from the issuing institution. Unofficial documentation will NOT be accepted and will only delay the processing of your application.

Applicants with degrees from Islamic Azad University (except for those from branches in Tehran) must obtain verification from the Higher Education Advisory of the Iranian Embassy in Ottawa that their specific degree program (including the campus “branch” where it was taken) has been approved by the “Educational Evaluation Committee for Azad University”.

Transcripts and other documents submitted to the university become the property of UBC and will not be returned.
