Call for Nominations: The 2019 Two-Year Worldwide IBM PhD Fellowship – Deadline: October 15, 2018

The IBM PhD Fellowship Program supports PhD students undertaking research in the following areas:

  • AI / Cognitive Computing
  • Blockchain
  • Cloud Computing
  • Core Technologies
  • Data Science / Big Data / Analytics
  • Internet of things
  • Quantum Computing
  • Security

The fellowship provides a stipend for two academic years, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Fellowship awardees are matched with an IBM mentor according to their technical interests and are encouraged to participate in an internship at least once while completing their studies.

Eligibility Criteria: Students should have three years remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. For example, nominees that are enrolled in a four year graduate program should have completed two years of their graduate program as of summer 2019 in order to benefit the most. Non-US Citizens who wish to participate in an internship in the US must obtain work authorization under the specifics of their visa. Students from US embargoed countries are not eligible for the program. Students receiving a comparable fellowship from another company or institution during the same academic period may not be eligible for an IBM PhD Fellowship.

Selection Criteria: Award recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head.

Nomination ProceduresNomination period is open from September 20 to October 15, 2018. Students must be nominated by a faculty member. The nomination form must be prepared and submitted by a faculty member. Each department may submit up to three nominations. Please forward all nominations to by 4pm October 15.

Nomination Materials:

  • Information about the student, the faculty advisor, the department head and university administration
  • Student’s CV (3 page limit), PhD thesis title, and a brief description of PhD thesis work (255 character limit)
  • Faculty advisor’s supporting statement (255 character limit)
  • Department head’s supporting statement (255 character limit)
