Faculty of Applied Science / Mechanical Engineering / 2024 / March / 21 / UBC Killam Research Prize awarded to Dr. Amanda Giang

UBC Killam Research Prize awarded to Dr. Amanda Giang

March 21, 2024

Dr. Amanda Giang uses computational modelling to explore the links between environmental data and policy making.

In recognition of her contributions to the field of environmental modelling and policy, Assistant Professor Amanda Giang has been awarded a UBC Killam Research Prize, one of the university’s top honours for research. Dr. Giang is one of ten campus researchers to be recognized for their outstanding research and scholarship. A faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES), Dr. Giang has received the prize for Applied Science and Science, in the early category.

Dr. Giang’s research investigates “how to better assess the environmental, health and equity impacts of technology and policy changes using simulation, data science and qualitative methods.” Using interdisciplinary approaches from natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering, Dr. Giang investigates the links between technology and humans while developing digital tools and methods to support effective environmental decision-making by communities, governments, and industry. Recently acknowledged for her expertise by the Canada Research Chair program, Dr. Giang is also the new Canada Research Chair in in Environmental Modelling for Policy.

The UBC Killam Research Prize honours up to ten faculty members each year from across the university from all fields of research, distinguishing campus excellence in achievement. Established in 1986, the annual award is supported by the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies founded by the late Dorothy J. Killam.

Congratulations to Dr. Giang and to all the recipients of the UBC Faculty Research Awards!
