Engineering Co-op

Through UBC Applied Science Co-op Program, employers can access a pool of students ranging from second-year to graduate (master’s) level. Employers set their own conditions for employment, and can submit applications throughout the year. The co-op program uses a two-round process: during the first round, the employer has access to the full student pool and can perform as many interviews as they wish. At the end of the first round, employers and students will rank their preferred students/positions. The UBC Co-op staff will then assign co-ops to companies based on the rankings. During the second round, the company can perform interviews and hire their preferred student immediately and directly.

In order to be considered a co-op position, the student must receive a salary from the employer. Co-op students can be hired for a period of 4 to 16 months. Most students are available for 4- and 8-month work terms.

The federal government and most provincial governments offer financial assistance and tax cuts on co-op salaries.

Funding Assistance

All UBC Engineering Co-op work terms are paid learning experiences. If you have a position but do not have the necessary funding to pay a student there may be assistance available. To find out if your company qualifies for organizational subsidies, please visit:

Mitacs Accelerate

The Mitacs Accelerate program is a research-based internship program bringing together post-secondary students, postdoctoral fellows, industry partners, and academic researchers to solve complex challenges and advance new ideas. Open to for-profit and non-for-profit organizations, the program provides funding and flexibility to support projects starting at four months, with opportunities to scale.

NSERC USRA Awards

The NSERC USRA encourage undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies and a career in research. Students are given financial support for a fourteen to sixteen week period so they can gain valuable research work experience.

InnovateBC

The Innovate BC Innovator Skills Initiative provides funding for co-op employers in the BC technology sector to facilitate knowledge transfer and innovation. The Ignite program provides teams of academia and industry working on projects in the areas of natural resources, applied sciences and engineering with up to $300,000 for research and development

Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP)

The National Research Council Canada’s IRAP program (NRC-IRAP) provides funding to foster the growth of Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprises. IRAP helps fund the development and commercialization of innovative technologies that will allow these enterprises to grow in the global marketplace. The program has dedicated IRAP Industrial Technology Advisors who are available for consultation to assess whether your enterprise is eligible.

Canada Summer Jobs Program

Service Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs Program provides funding to help small businesses, public sector employers, and non-profit organizations hire students during the summer term. Approved employers in both the public and private sectors can receive funding of up to 50 per cent of minimum wage per student employee, while approved non-profit organizations can receive up to 100 per cent of the minimum wage per student employee. The application period is in late January-early February of each year, and employers are notified of the outcome of their application in May.
