Can you tell us a little bit about the kind of work you do?
As a Real Estate Analyst with CanFirst Capital Management, I underwrite real estate investment opportunities, perform market research, and assist with due diligence activities on potential acquisitions.
What have been the turning points and milestones in your career?
After taking a course on HVAC and falling in love with real estate, I began working as an engineer in the building design and construction industry. Wanting to take on a more significant role in the real estate decision making process, I left my job as a professional mechanical engineer to pursue an MBA. While I am still employed in the commercial real estate sector, I have been given more responsibilities and am able to continually learn new things while doing what I truly love.
What is a fact about your work that people might find surprising?
While we evaluate dozens of potential acquisitions, we may only bid on a few of them. Of the properties that we do bid on, only a few of those will close.
What was your favourite thing to do on campus as a UBC student?
I enjoyed having lunch with classmates and learning about their unique backgrounds.
Do you have any advice you would like to share with students interested in pursuing Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineering is a highly versatile degree. To learn more about the many interesting careers that are suitable for mechanical engineering graduates, participate in the Engineering Mentoring Program and use the time on campus to engage with not only your classmates, but also students from other faculties. You will be surprised at how much you will learn speaking with others.
