Classroom Spaces
While the Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Building (CEME) is home to both the department’s Administrative Office and many learning and research spaces, our students will often have classes in a variety of buildings on campus, and below is a sample of some classroom spaces where they may have lectures or tutorials.

Forest Sciences Centre
The Forest Sciences Centre (FSC) is home to the Faculty of Forestry. MECH students sometimes have lectures or tutorials in this building. FSC is home to a variety of classrooms, lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, office space, computer labs, study areas, and food outlets.
The FSC’s striking atrium is is one of the Designated Learning Spaces on campus at UBC, designed to showcase the use of Canadian forest products. Natural light comes in through the ceiling skylight and the atrium is surrounded by greenery with woodwork adorning the walls and ceiling. Hugh Dempster Pavilion
The Hugh Dempster Pavilion (DMP) is at the hub for the computer science community at UBC to unify the administrative and teaching centres.
The Pavilion is named after Hugh Dempster, a former computer science professor, who was renowned for his compassion for undergraduates and was one of the original four faculty members to join the Department in 1968.The Pavilion houses three medium lecture theatres as well as two smaller classrooms. Each of the three floors contains a central lobby with individual study spaces.
MECH students often have lectures in the DMP lecture theatres, or tutorials in this building.

Orchard Commons
Located on the south side of campus, Orchard Commons (ORCH) is a mixed-use building that contains UBC’s newest residence and classroom spaces.
Opened in 2016, the building features stunning architecture and design, a LEED Gold certificate, and a range of classrooms equipped with the newest technologies. Orchard Commons also has a wide variety of informal study spaces to use outside of class, including a dedicated study lounge, high tech study nooks, and the dining hall. Below is a typical seminar and tutorial room found in this building.
