As a UBC researcher, Professor Jaiman works to develop computational tools which predict the vibrations caused by ships that create underwater noise, allowing for the design of ships with reduced impact on marine ecosystems. Marine animals like whales use sound to hunt, navigate and communicate, so designing ships that create less underwater noise will allow them to thrive in busy harbours like Vancouver’s. His team in the Computational Multiphysics Laboratory creates computational simulations that use machine learning to analyze and predict fluid-structure interactions in complex underwater environments. He holds the NSERC/Seaspan Industrial Research Chair in Intelligent and Green Marine Vessels (IGMVs), alongside Associate Professor Jasmin Jelovica. Dr. Jaiman is also a faculty member with UBC’s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering graduate programs, training the next generation of ship designers and maritime industry leadership.
The Spring 2024 SNAME Fellows will officially be recognized at the October 14-16 2024 SNAME Maritime Convention in Virginia.
