On May 29, 2025 we were excited and honoured to celebrate the accomplishments of all of our spring graduates, as well as award winners who were recognized for their academic, design, and leadership excellence!

The UBC Emeritus College has recognized Professor Emeritus Muhammad (Mo) Iqbal as a 2025 recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Service. Distinguished speaker Dr. Norman Fleck explores how the interplay of mechanical loading and chemical degradation leads to crack growth in materials. He reviews two case studies: adhesively bonded ship structures in marine environments, and nickel-rich single-crystal cathode particles in lithium-ion batteries.

Understanding strain localization and fault slip in earthquake systems requires insight into the coupled processes of fluid flow and deformation in porous media. In this talk. Dr. Luca Dal Zilio (NTU) explores recent advances in modeling poromechanical mechanisms that govern these phenomena.

This talk introduces a typical biomechanical workflow for the mechanical characterization and modeling of soft biological tissues. An overview of ongoing work in skin biomechanics will set thestage for a focused discussion on the role of heterogeneity in the aorta.
