UBC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is located at the Vancouver ʔəlqsən (Point Grey) campus, on the unceded traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. Our department includes more than 500 undergraduate students, approximately 200 graduate students, 34 tenured or tenure-track research faculty, 8 tenured or tenure-track educational leadership faculty, 6 lecturers, a staff team of administrative, student services and technical personnel, along with a number of active emeritus and adjunct faculty, and numerous grant-funded postdoctoral fellows and research staff. Our strategic plan identifies “Prioritizing People” as a central theme.

To achieve this we strive to:

  • Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and research;
  • Enrich our community through mentorship.

Examples of the way we show we value our people range from big ones, like an exceptional pension plan, health and travel health insurance, professional development  funding (plus department top up), and excellent parental leave coverage, to the little things like an informal gathering area with coffee and tea and a variety of fun departmental events for faculty, staff, and their families.
