Juan Abelló

Research:
Juan Abelló is part of the educational leadership stream at UBC. He is affiliated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the first-year engineering program at Vantage College. He co-teaches introductory courses in engineering design and teaches introductory courses in mathematical analysis for engineering applications. His graduate research studied the effects of aerodynamic forces (lift, downforce, thrust, drag) and certain flight parameters (flight speed, descent angle) on the likelihood of rotorcraft blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise. This work considered tiltrotors near helicopter mode and helicopters.
Prior to UBC:
Juan completed BS (honors), MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca (NY). He then taught thermodynamics and aeronautics as Visiting Lecturer at Cornell. Later he joined Bell Helicopter in Mirabel (QC) as Technical Specialist in the Rotor and Mechanical Systems Group. There he worked in stress analysis of helicopter control system components and collaborated in the certification of the Bell 429 light twin helicopter. Afterwards Juan joined the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg (MB) as Senior Instructor in Mechanical Engineering. During this appointment he taught courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, control theory and mechanical engineering laboratories (thermofluids, vibrations and solid mechanics).
Accolades:
Juan received the Graduating Class Award for Excellence in Teaching in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba. He was also recipient of the Ralph Bolgiano Sr. Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell. His technical work has been published in the Journal of Aircraft and presented at AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Specialists Meetings.
Personal interests:
Juan is a student of classical fencing. He has much yet to learn.
