Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. The Mechanical Engineering Department has been a vital component of the Faculty of Applied Science since the University was founded in 1915. Our Department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Several faculty members within the Department have been recipients of teaching awards from the University and from the community outside UBC. In addition to great teachers, we also provide our students with an innovative and engaging curriculum. Many of our undergraduate offerings, including our innovative MECH 2 year and the Mechatronics Option, have won university-level and professional society awards.
We are proud to be one of the most active research departments in Canada. The research activities of the 34 full-time faculty members, 6 professors emeriti, 3 adjunct faculty, and 5 associate faculty range across the wide spectrum of Mechanical Engineering. We are fortunate to have modern facilities and a dedicated technical and office staff to support our academic programs and research. Funding for research (approximately $4.5 million per year) comes from both government and industry, and most of the approximately 170 graduate students are fully supported as research assistants. Vancouver is an attractive city in which to live and work, and graduate students from many parts of the world find living here to be a rewarding experience.
